Abortion Pill
The abortion pill is a treatment with medication. You use tablets on the first and third day to terminate the pregnancy.
- The abortion pill can be used at 5 to 9 weeks of pregnancy.
- For the most part, treatment is at home.
- You have blood loss and abdominal cramps.
How it works
In this animated video, we explain step by step how the abortion pill works.
Step 1
Make an appointment
Want to make an appointment at one of our clinics? Please have your citizen service number (BSN) handy. This number can be found on your passport, identity card or driver’s license.
Call 088 200 73 33
or email info@mildredclinics.nl
What do you bring to your appointment?
- A valid proof of identity: passport, identity card or driver's license
- A medication summary or the medications you are taking.
- Your health card or proof of enrollment with health insurance (if your BSN is not on your ID).
- A card with your blood type (if you have this).
Step 2
Intake interview
When you come to us for an appointment, we always begin with an intake interview. You may of course bring your (former) partner or a companion. During the interview we also always take a moment to talk to you alone.
Echo
An ultrasound is done to determine if and how long you are pregnant. This is how we know what treatment options are available to you. You may choose whether you want to watch the ultrasound with us.
In conversation
In addition, you will discuss with the doctor, and often a nurse, your situation and your treatment options. In this way we will see if the treatment you want fits your medication and medical history. We can also advise you on contraception.
Before we start treatment, we ask for your consent to treatment by signing a treatment agreement.
Doubt?
The intake interview does not always mean that you already know exactly what you want with the pregnancy. Doubt is perfectly normal. And there is plenty of room for that. There is no right or wrong choice. Only the decision that seems best to you at this moment.
When in doubt, we often refer you to Information Point unintentionally pregnant. They will support you in making your choice.
Step 3
Abortion Pill
Day 1: first tablet in the clinic
If you choose treatment with the abortion pill, you will take the first tablet at the clinic, by mouth with water. This tablet prepares your body for further treatment. Then you may go home and do whatever you want. We will give you the other tablets.
Usually you won’t notice anything from this first tablet. Some people do experience some stomach discomfort or abdominal cramps, with occasional blood loss.
Do you vomit within 1 hour of taking the first tablet? If so, please contact us.
Day 2: taking a break
The day after your first tablet, you may work or do other things as usual. You may lose some blood at the end of the day. Very occasionally you may lose the amniotic sac at this point. Nevertheless, you should then continue treatment on day 3.
Day 3: Insert 4 tablets and stay home
For the third day, follow these steps:
- Go to the toilet and urinate thoroughly. Preferably do this right after your breakfast. Can’t do it in the morning? Then insert the tablets later in the day. Even then, you go to the toilet first to pee.
- Take painkillers even before you are in pain and begin the next steps. In the client portal, you will find which painkillers you are allowed to take.
- Lie on the bed and insert 4 tablets through your vagina. You were given these tablets by our clinic. Wear sanitary pads after insertion.
- Stay in bed for 30 minutes to 1 hour to allow the tablets to do their work.
- Our advice is to stay at home. Walk around regularly to make sure the process begins. Not feeling very well? Then take it easy.
- You usually lose the amniotic sac after 4 to 6 hours. But it can also be faster or take longer. You may be able to see the amniotic sac. This looks like a small, white cotton ball with flakes (see website Fiom). Often this happens when you are sitting on the toilet. In the process, you probably lose blood and large or small clots. In addition, you will probably get abdominal cramps and may feel nauseous. This is quite normal and is different for everyone.
- Further into the day, the bleeding and pain diminish. If this does not happen and you continue to bleed heavily for hours? Then call our clinic or your own doctor.
- Contact the clinic if you have not had cramps or blood loss after 24 hours.
After day 3: blood loss slowly subsides
The treatment is now over. After this day, you will probably lose blood for some time. This may be until your next period. After 4 to 6 weeks, you will have your first period again.
4 weeks after the treatment, you will take a pregnancy test that we will give you for verification.
After an abortion, you are immediately fertile again. You can come to us for contraceptive advice. If you want to have an IUD or hormone rod placed, this can be done during or after your first period. You can also come to our clinic for this.
When you terminate your pregnancy, you may experience different feelings. Everything you feel is allowed to be there. Would you like to talk to someone about this? Contact us and we will guide you in finding the right help. At Mildred Clinics, we have your full attention.

Frequently Asked Questions
During the intake interview our doctor always makes an ultrasound to determine how far along your pregnancy is. This also allows us to confirm that it is a normal pregnancy in the right place in your womb. We then know which treatment options are available for you. You may choose for yourself whether you want to watch along during the ultrasound.
Sometimes the ultrasound image is unclear, for example because you are only very recently pregnant. The gestational sac is then so small that we cannot see it on the ultrasound. If we cannot see the pregnancy yet, it is not certain that you can be treated at this moment.
Usually we then make a new appointment with you at our clinic, in which we make another ultrasound. The treatment can then probably go ahead. On rare occasions we refer you to a gynaecologist.
At our clinics in Arnhem and Eindhoven you can have an abortion treatment up to 18 weeks of pregnancy. After 18 weeks we refer you to Bloemenhove Kliniek in Amsterdam/Heemstede or the Vrelinghuis in Utrecht. If you are more than 22 weeks pregnant, an abortion at an abortion clinic is no longer possible. In that case, consult a general practitioner, midwife or gynaecologist about whether you can get a referral to the hospital.
The abortion pill, a suction treatment and an instrumental treatment are all safe. In our clinic we work only with experienced and qualified abortion doctors. Do you choose sedation? An anaesthesiologist connected to our clinic ensures that this goes well and safely.
Very occasionally complications occur. In a very rare case some of the pregnancy remains behind, with possible blood loss or infection as a result. This can often be resolved with medication. In rare cases an additional treatment is needed. If serious complications occur, we receive immediate support from the hospital.
Before the start of a treatment we always discuss with you what the possible risks and complications are and what you should do in the event of a complication.
Which treatment suits your situation? Every way of ending a pregnancy has advantages and disadvantages. The choice of treatment depends on how far along your pregnancy is and on your medical history. Of course we guide you in your decision, with our knowledge and care. So that you always feel safe and at ease.
An abortion has no effect on later pregnancies. You are fertile again immediately after an abortion.
